Transfer Learning

Transfer learning is a machine learning technique where a model trained on one task or domain is adapted for a different but related task, leveraging existing knowledge rather than training from scratch.

理解する Transfer Learning

Training a large model from scratch requires enormous data, compute, and time. Transfer learning makes AI development practical by starting from a pre-trained model that already understands language, images, or other domains, then fine-tuning it on task-specific data with much less resource investment. The modern LLM ecosystem is built entirely on transfer learning. GPT-4, Claude, and Llama are pre-trained on vast internet text, learning general language understanding. They're then fine-tuned on instruction-following data to become helpful assistants. Further fine-tuning on specific domains (medical, legal, coding) creates specialized variants. Transfer learning works because knowledge generalizes. A model trained on billions of English sentences learns grammar, world knowledge, and reasoning patterns that transfer to new tasks. The pre-trained representation captures fundamental structure that's valuable across many applications. For users of AI assistants, transfer learning explains why LLMs can be helpful on tasks they weren't explicitly trained for. The broad pre-training base provides a foundation that generalizes to novel instructions and domains.

GAIAの活用方法 Transfer Learning

GAIA leverages transfer learning by building on top of pre-trained foundation models rather than training from scratch. The LLMs GAIA uses (Claude, GPT-4, Llama) bring broad world knowledge, reasoning, and language capabilities through pre-training. GAIA then adapts these capabilities to productivity workflows through prompt engineering and tool integration rather than additional training.

関連概念

Fine-Tuning

Fine-tuning is the process of taking a pre-trained AI model and continuing its training on a smaller, task-specific dataset to adapt its behavior for a particular domain or application.

Foundation Model

A foundation model is a large AI model trained on broad data at scale that can be adapted to a wide range of downstream tasks through fine-tuning, prompting, or integration into application architectures.

Large Language Model (LLM)

A Large Language Model (LLM) is a deep learning model trained on massive text datasets that can understand, generate, and reason about human language across a wide range of tasks.

Prompt Engineering

Prompt engineering is the practice of designing and refining inputs to AI language models to reliably elicit desired outputs, shaping model behavior without modifying the underlying weights.

Few-Shot Learning

Few-shot learning is the ability of an AI model to adapt to a new task or output format from just a small number of input-output examples provided in the prompt, without any weight updates.

よくある質問

GAIA primarily uses prompt engineering and retrieval augmentation rather than fine-tuning to adapt LLMs to productivity workflows. This approach provides more flexibility and allows GAIA to switch between LLM providers without retraining.
