AI Copilot
An AI copilot is an artificial intelligence system that works alongside a human user, providing suggestions, drafting content, surfacing relevant information, and automating subtasks while the human retains control over final decisions.

The copilot metaphor captures an important distinction in AI assistance: the AI is a skilled collaborator, not a replacement. A copilot in aviation assists the pilot, handles routine tasks, monitors systems, and provides critical information, but the pilot commands the aircraft. AI copilots work similarly: they handle the mechanical and routine aspects of knowledge work while the human focuses on judgment, creativity, and decisions that require human insight.
GitHub Copilot popularized the term by helping developers write code through inline suggestions. The concept has expanded to every knowledge work domain: AI copilots for writing, design, legal work, finance, sales, and productivity management. The common thread is human-in-the-loop design where the AI augments rather than replaces human judgment.
The distinction between a copilot and a fully autonomous agent lies in the approval model. A copilot suggests and the human approves. An autonomous agent acts and may report after the fact. Most AI systems, including GAIA, offer configurable behavior across this spectrum: acting autonomously for routine low-risk tasks and requiring approval for significant or sensitive actions.
Effective AI copilots provide proactive suggestions without overwhelming the user. They surface the right information at the right time, draft content that closely matches the user's intent, and make it easy to accept, modify, or reject suggestions with minimal friction.
