Habit Stacking

Habit stacking is a behavior change technique that links a new habit to an existing established habit, using the cue of the current habit to automatically trigger the new one.

Coined by James Clear in Atomic Habits, habit stacking leverages the brain's existing neural pathways to establish new behaviors. The formula is simple: after or before an existing habit, perform the new habit. For example, after opening your laptop each morning, check GAIA's daily briefing. The existing habit serves as a reliable cue that triggers the new behavior without requiring separate willpower or reminders. Habit stacking works because established habits are deeply encoded as automated neural sequences — attaching new behaviors to these sequences makes them easier to initiate and sustain.
