Single-Tasking

Single-tasking is the practice of dedicating focused attention to one task at a time before moving to the next, as opposed to multitasking, which involves switching between multiple tasks simultaneously.

理解する Single-Tasking

Research consistently shows that human multitasking is largely a myth. What we call multitasking is actually rapid task-switching, and each switch incurs a cognitive cost — the residual attention from the previous task lingers and reduces performance on the current one. Studies show multitasking reduces efficiency by up to 40% and increases error rates significantly. Single-tasking, by contrast, allows full cognitive resources to be directed at one problem, producing faster, higher-quality results. The challenge is that modern work environments — with constant notifications, open inboxes, and multiple communication channels — are structurally opposed to single-tasking.

GAIAの活用方法 Single-Tasking

GAIA enables single-tasking by managing the digital environment around you. By triaging your inbox, holding notifications during focus blocks, and handling routine communications autonomously, GAIA reduces the pull toward task-switching so you can maintain focus on one thing at a time.

Context Switching

Context switching is the act of shifting mental focus from one task, tool, or topic to another, incurring a cognitive cost as the brain must rebuild its working model of the new context.

Focus Session

A focus session is a dedicated, scheduled period of uninterrupted time committed to a single task or project, protected from notifications, meetings, and other interruptions to enable sustained deep work.

Attention Management

Attention management is the deliberate practice of directing cognitive focus toward high-value activities and protecting it from low-value interruptions, notifications, and reactive work.

よくある質問

Multitasking is effective only for truly automatic tasks that require no conscious attention, like listening to music while exercising. For any two tasks that both require cognitive processing, multitasking degrades performance on both. Single-tasking is always superior for cognitively demanding work.
