AI Assistant vs AI Agent

An AI assistant is AI that helps a person on request: you ask, it answers or carries out the task, and you stay in the loop. An AI agent is AI that is given a goal and works toward it by itself, deciding which steps to take and which tools to use along the way. Most capable AI assistants today are built on agents underneath.

Understanding AI Assistant vs AI Agent

The two terms describe different amounts of autonomy. An AI assistant is defined by its relationship to you: it waits for a request, responds inside a conversation, and hands control back after each turn. Siri setting a timer and ChatGPT drafting an email are assistant behaviour. An AI agent is defined by its relationship to a goal: it plans a sequence of steps, calls tools such as an inbox, a calendar or a browser, checks the result, and keeps going until the goal is met or it needs help. An agent that watches incoming email, files the action items as tasks and schedules the follow-up meeting is acting on its own between your requests. In practice the line blurs, because modern assistants increasingly use agents to do the work you ask for. A useful test is to ask who starts the work and who decides the next step. If you start it and approve each step, it is an assistant. If it starts from a goal or a trigger and chooses its own steps, it is an agent. Agents trade convenience for oversight, which is why good agent systems let a human approve risky actions such as sending, deleting or paying.

How GAIA Uses AI Assistant vs AI Agent

GAIA is an AI assistant on the outside and a system of AI agents underneath. You talk to one assistant that knows your context and memory. When a request needs real work, it hands the job to an executor agent that holds the tools for your email, calendar, tasks and connected apps, and that agent can bring in specialised subagents for individual integrations. Workflows push GAIA fully into agent territory: they start on a schedule or when something happens in a connected tool, such as a new email, and run without a prompt. Approval modes decide how much oversight you keep, from asking before anything is sent, deleted or posted to running what you clearly asked for.

Related Concepts

AI Assistant

An AI assistant is software that understands requests in plain language and then acts on them: it answers questions, but it also drafts and sends email, schedules meetings, tracks tasks and runs multi-step workflows inside the apps you already use. Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, ChatGPT and GAIA are all AI assistants; what separates them is how much real work each one can do on your behalf.

AI Agent

An AI agent is an autonomous software system that perceives its environment, reasons about what to do, and takes actions to achieve specific goals without continuous human direction.

Chatbot vs AI Assistant

A chatbot is software that talks with you: it answers questions in a chat window using scripted rules or a language model. The difference between a chatbot and an AI assistant is action. A chatbot replies; an AI assistant (often called a virtual or digital assistant) also does the work, such as sending the email, booking the meeting or creating the task, in the tools you already use.

Agentic AI

Agentic AI describes artificial intelligence systems designed to operate autonomously, making decisions and executing multi-step tasks with minimal human oversight.

Autonomous Agent

An autonomous agent is an AI system capable of independently perceiving its environment, making decisions, and taking actions to achieve specified goals without requiring human input at each step.

Human-in-the-Loop

Human-in-the-loop (HITL) is a design pattern where an AI system includes human oversight and approval at critical decision points, ensuring that sensitive or high-impact actions require human confirmation before execution.

Subagent

A subagent is an AI agent that another agent starts to handle one part of a bigger task. The parent agent (often called the supervisor or orchestrator) gives it a written task, a focused set of tools and a fresh context of its own; the subagent works on that piece independently and returns only its result. Splitting work this way lets several subagents run in parallel and keeps the main agent's context clean.

Proactive AI

Proactive AI is AI that acts before you ask: it watches for events (a new email, an upcoming meeting, a deadline), decides when something needs attention, and starts the work or alerts you on its own. Reactive AI is the opposite: it does nothing until you send a prompt or a command, and then it responds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Autonomy. An AI assistant responds to your requests one turn at a time, and you decide what happens next. An AI agent is given a goal, plans its own steps, uses tools to carry them out, and keeps working until the goal is met or it needs your input.

In everyday use ChatGPT is an AI assistant: it answers and drafts inside a conversation when you prompt it. Features that let a model browse, call tools and take several steps toward a goal are agent behaviour, so the same product can sit on both sides of the line depending on how it is used.

Mostly no. Siri is a voice assistant that carries out single commands, such as setting a timer or sending a message, when you ask. It does not pursue a multi-step goal on its own.

Not by default. Agents save more time on repetitive, multi-step work, but they need access to your tools and sensible limits. An assistant is enough when you want help with one thing at a time and prefer to stay in control of every step.

Both. You talk to GAIA as one assistant, and it uses agents to do the work: an executor agent with access to your connected tools, plus workflows that run on a schedule or when a new email or calendar event arrives. You choose how often it asks for approval before acting.
