Email Triage

Email triage is the process of reviewing incoming emails and categorizing them by urgency, type, and required action — determining what needs an immediate response, what can wait, what can be delegated, and what can be archived without a reply.

Understanding Email Triage

The term comes from medical triage — the battlefield practice of sorting patients by urgency to direct care where it's most needed. Applied to email, triage asks: which emails need an immediate response? Which need a response but can wait? Which need to be forwarded or delegated? Which require no reply? Manual triage is cognitively expensive. Each email requires a quick read, a decision about priority, and usually some action (labeling, starring, creating a task, or archiving). For high-volume inboxes receiving 100+ emails per day, manual triage can consume 1-2 hours daily. AI-powered email triage automates this decision-making. A trained model can classify incoming emails by urgency (urgent, important, low-priority, noise), type (action required, FYI, newsletter, thread update, sales), and appropriate action (reply, delegate, create task, archive).
