OMI

OMI is a source-available AI pendant that listens to conversations and makes them searchable later. It is budget source-available hardware.

Understanding OMI

OMI takes the open route to wearables. The hardware listens throughout your day, and the source-available software turns those conversations into a searchable record you control.

Because it is source-available, you can inspect what it does with your audio and run parts of it yourself. That transparency is rare in a category built on always-on microphones.

Capture is only half the job. OMI remembers what was said. It does not draft the follow-up email, create the task, or update the calendar. Recall without action still leaves you the to-do list.

How GAIA Uses OMI

GAIA respects the source-available ethos and shares it: GAIA is source-available (PolyForm Noncommercial) and self-hostable via Docker. Where OMI stops at recall, GAIA continues into action, turning captured context into drafted emails, created tasks, and scheduled events across your integrations.

Related Concepts

AI Assistant

An AI assistant is software that understands requests in plain language and then acts on them: it answers questions, but it also drafts and sends email, schedules meetings, tracks tasks and runs multi-step workflows inside the apps you already use. Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, ChatGPT and GAIA are all AI assistants; what separates them is how much real work each one can do on your behalf.

Open Source AI

Source-available AI refers to artificial intelligence software whose source code is publicly available, allowing anyone to inspect, modify, distribute, and contribute to the project.

Self-Hosting

Self-hosting is the practice of running software on your own servers or infrastructure instead of using a cloud-hosted service, giving you complete control over your data, configuration, and availability.

Proactive AI

Proactive AI is AI that acts before you ask: it watches for events (a new email, an upcoming meeting, a deadline), decides when something needs attention, and starts the work or alerts you on its own. Reactive AI is the opposite: it does nothing until you send a prompt or a command, and then it responds.

Bee

Bee is Amazon's wearable AI: a paid Frontier band or clip that listens through your day and turns conversations into searchable takeaways, summaries, and to-dos.

Friend Pendant

Friend is a paid AI pendant you wear around your neck. It listens to your day and texts you like a companion, but it does not manage your email or calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

OMI is budget-priced open hardware, and the software is source-available for inspection and self-hosting.

Yes. OMI is source-available, so you can inspect the code and self-host parts of it. That is a real privacy advantage over closed wearables.
